First grades students making real world connections with their ELA lesson about Beach Day. Students enjoyed playing in the sand and other beach themed activities. We would like to thank our Community Partners, Mr. Billy Sanders at South GA Sand for donating the sand, Mr. Lewis for delivering the sand, and Councilman Kregg Close for helping us make the connections. The students had a blast!

Bearcat Pride Wednesday at West Bainbridge Primary!
Our amazing staff at West Bainbridge Primary showed their Bearcat spirit today by proudly participating in Bearcat Pride Wednesday! We're honored to support scholarships for Bainbridge High School students.

Principal, West Bainbridge Primary
With 21 years of service, Ortega Butler leads West Bainbridge Primary with dedication, high expectations, and a passion for seeing students succeed. Originally from Bainbridge, Butler oversees a team of 82 employees, ensuring that the educational needs of all students are being met every day.
Before entering education, Butler worked with the Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS), where she witnessed many of the challenges children face. That experience inspired her to shift to a role where she could see and support students at their best, which is in education.
In her role as principal, Butler focuses on fostering both academic and social growth for every student. “Seeing students grow academically and socially is the most rewarding part of my job,” she shares. She also works to support teachers in acquiring the skills they need to help all students achieve academic success.
A Bit More About Ortega:
Hometown: Bainbridge, GA
Hobbies: Reading, shopping, and spending time with family.
Fun Fact: She can play the flute
Favorite Song: Sweet Home Alabama
Butler takes pride in West Bainbridge Primary’s family-oriented culture, where staff members work together to support one another and the community they serve. She reflects, “I am proud to be a part of a great school family-oriented culture that supports each other.”
Thank you, Ortega, for your leadership, commitment, and Bearcat pride!

The OPENGATE Security System is an advanced, walk-through weapons detection system designed to enhance school safety while maintaining a smooth flow of student entry. Unlike traditional metal detectors, OPENGATE uses advanced sensors to detect weapons and prohibited items without requiring students to stop, empty their pockets, or remove backpacks. This allows for efficient and non-intrusive screening, ideal for high-traffic areas such as school entrances.
Decatur County Schools has implemented OPENGATE to provide an added layer of protection for students and staff. The system is portable, quick to set up, and built to detect a wide range of threats while minimizing false alarms. With its modern design and cutting-edge technology, OPENGATE supports the district’s commitment to creating a safe and nurturing learning environment. We encourage all parents to emphasize to their children the importance of school safety and helping the Bearcat Family stay safe on every campus each day!
See how OPENGATE is making a difference in some of the largest school districts in the country, like Brevard County:
